The year had passed and we were back together. King of the wing – Lapland 2006 started on 31st March in Helsinki; with a different format, but good healthy rider’s core of this sport. Yeah healthy … Patrick Blom, the guy behind this years King of the wing and the creator of this caravan road trip idea got injured just a few days before the trip.
He went through the knee surgery while we were enjoying the Lapland backyard. Even he was not there with us in person, he was our mystery weather man watching the synoptic maps for us all the time; directing us towards the right spots all the week. As the lyrics of one Finish song say ‘Too close to Russia, too far from Japan’ was a place where we spent nine days. Nine days of travelling, fun and adventure. Covering more than 3500 kilometres in Lapland we witnessed this countryside at its finest. Riding the spots which makes you wanna go ‘wahuuuuuuuu’ with the beach brake, reindeers or just endless landscape. Finishing in good old kitewing spot in Ylläs where we crowned the new KING.
And who is this year’s King of the wing? As all riders (except for him) have agreed, he is the true master of EARTH, WIND and FIRE!!!
Hannu Nurmivirta, 56 years old fireman from Kerava, maybe did not make the biggest jump of the week, nor the biggest crash. He started this year’s kitewing season going through the ice and loosing both his wing and snowboard. But his drive towards the adventure has inspired everybody not only during this week. The first one out on our big “playground fields” of Lapland in the morning and the last one to come back home in the evening. He has the circumspection of a king as well as the craziness of a child. He enjoys every line and every turn. And damn he can go fast and damn he can turn sharp. If you think you can outspeed this fellow on the straight line, or make a sharper turn, you are mistaken big time bro. He enjoys the simple things and you can see smile on his face even if the conditions are not perfect or his poikki putki on poikki. It is really rare to find such a great attitude these days. Those are the reasons why we have him as our new king for this year.
Your Highness, You are a legend already.
Many thanks to all of you who took part on the trip or in any way made it possible. Sponsors, organizers, locals who made us feel like home. Just enjoy the pictures now and video very soon.
