Great place, awesome town, very nice people, tough race. The week in San Francisco in a nutshell. The city has its own atmosphere, that is difficult to describe. We had 13 races in 3 days somewhere between the Golden gate bridge and Alcatras. Tough conditions, cold water, typical stream, wind. One of the most difficult places to compete that I have ever tried. But those would be the only „cons“ of the place.
The organising Saint Francis Yacht club is one of the most noble I’ve ever visited. Amazing club in the heart of the city. And there wasn’t any sign „No surfers“ like everywhere in the world, this was a different story. Things like shower, sauna or an energetic drink are taken there for granted. Althought you cannot compare the number of competitors with the European series of the World cup, the best Americans participated in the race. They were the ones who knew the place and particularly the stream and it was me who just could not get it and was constantly asking why. The whole windsurfing world should take a good example from the organising comitee, as they were there because of us, not vice versa. So if you think that 13 races is too much for 3 days, and it is, we were unstressed and cool. Sometimes I had a feeling, that it would be nice to take a photo with The bridge, or a big ferry boat, that was just passing by. There was a tough competition going on and I was actively taking part till the very last moment. It would have been even better if I had been able to win couple of races when I was leading. Anyway, I’m taking home with me a piece of metal for 3rd place and that’s nice. Now they know even in San Francisco that SVK doesn’t mean „Suvaki Islands“, but Slovakia; a country, where you can find great windsurfers too...
